From Stigma to Empowerment: Reclaiming the True Meaning of ‘March 8th’
I

The recent March 8th marked the 115th anniversary of International Women’s Day. We have keenly observed that in certain Chinese dialects, the term “三八” (March 8th) has evolved into slang used to mock women as “nosy” or “unrefined,” rooted in gender stereotypes. Since the late 20th century, pop culture, including films and TV shows, has amplified this derogatory usage. It is crucial to note that such usage is neither universal nor widely accepted. In the context of International Women’s Day, “三八” remains a positive term celebrating women’s achievements and their fight for equality.
